Design a suspended installation that builds a solid-seeming volume out of nothing but hanging threads. Show several thousand fine cords dropped from a grid of anchor points in a gallery ceiling, each cut to a precisely calculated length so their lower ends together describe a smooth three-dimensional surface hanging in the middle of the room — a great inverted dome, a wave, a hollow cone — while the cords above remain a uniform vertical curtain. Detail the individual cords as very thin, perhaps one millimetre, and spaced at fifty-millimetre centres, so from directly beneath the array reads as an open forest of lines but from an oblique angle the sightlines close up and the volume becomes apparently solid. Show both readings in one image by composing at an angle where part of the mass reads dense and part reads transparent. Detail the cords as a single colour graduating along their length — dark at the ceiling fading to near-white at the tips — so the described surface glows brighter than the curtain above it. Show a visitor standing beneath the lowest point, the cord tips just above their head. Detail the shadow on the floor as a soft grey field of thousands of points.
