Design a public artwork whose output is sound rather than image. Show a cluster of eleven vertical steel tubes of graduated heights, from three metres to nine, standing close together on a windswept headland, each tube open at the top and cut with a precisely positioned slot near its base so that passing wind excites the air column inside and the tube sounds a sustained low note. Detail the tubes as varying in diameter as well as height, from two hundred to six hundred millimetres, each combination tuned to a specific pitch so the group produces a slowly shifting chord that changes with wind speed and direction. Show the arrangement as slightly irregular in plan, the tubes leaning marginally different ways, so the cluster looks organic rather than engineered. Detail the material as weathering steel with a deep even rust patina, the slots cut cleanly and their edges bright where wind-borne grit has kept them polished. Show the visual cues for sound: long grass streaming hard in one direction, a person standing among the tubes with a hand resting on one to feel it vibrate, another with head tilted listening.
