Design a large public sculpture in the manner of Richard Serra, made from single plates of steel that unsettle the body rather than please the eye. Show two curved plates each some forty metres long and four high, standing on the paving with no base, no bolts and no bracing, held upright by their own weight and curvature alone. Detail each plate as leaning — one tipping toward the viewer and the other away — so that walking the narrow channel between them the walls seem alternately to close overhead and to fall open, and a person's sense of balance is continuously contradicted. Show the plate thickness as substantial, fifty millimetres or more, visible only at the top edge where the raw sawn edge runs as a thin bright line against the sky. Detail the surface as weathering steel with a deep variegated patina — orange, russet and near-black in broad drifting fields, streaked vertically where rain has run — and rough enough to read as skin rather than as paint. Show the ground beneath stained a permanent rust colour where runoff has marked the paving. Set it on an open plaza. Show overcast light so the patina reads richly. Photorealistic, oppressive, rust orange and grey, low view into the channel.
