Design a sunken garden made from the excavated pits of a demolished Taiwanese pulp mill. Compose a deep rectangular concrete pit left with its original stained walls, tie holes and pipe penetrations, now planted at the base with tree ferns, bird's nest ferns and other shade-loving natives that thrive in the cool damp bottom. Cross the void with a slim steel bridge at ground level and take a stair down one wall. Let water pool shallowly at the lowest point. Keep the planting entirely within the pit so the surrounding ground reads as flat and empty.
