Design a public canopy as a timber gridshell. Show a doubly curved shell formed from long thin laminated timber laths bent on site into a lattice, the grid laid out as a diagonal mesh of squares that shear into diamonds wherever the surface curves more tightly, so the pattern itself records the geometry. Detail the laths as slim rectangular sections roughly fifty by fifty millimetres, doubled in each direction and bolted at every crossing through a simple plate, with the bolt heads left plainly visible. Show the shell touching the ground along only two long curved edges, springing up between them into a low arching vault about eight metres at its crown, so the structure reads as a woven fabric held in tension rather than as a frame. Detail the covering as nothing at all across most of the span, leaving the lattice open to the sky, with only a central band closed by a translucent membrane. Show the shadow this casts as a dense diamond mesh drifting across the paving. Set it in a park clearing with mature trees behind. Show mid-afternoon sun.
