Design a residential courtyard as a fragment of woodland rather than a garden. Show a group of large multi-stem trees with high canopies planted in an irregular natural arrangement rather than a grid, their trunks the courtyard's main vertical structure, casting deep dappled shade across the whole space. Detail the ground as a mixed shade-tolerant understorey — ferns, ophiopogon, native ground covers and leaf litter left in place — with no lawn and no clipped hedge anywhere.
