Design a park bench from recycled plastic lumber, letting the material's real character show instead of imitating wood. Show chunky solid profiles — slats a full fifty millimetres thick and considerably heavier in appearance than timber would be — carried on a simple galvanised steel frame, the extra thickness necessary to the material and therefore expressed rather than hidden. Detail the surface as a dense mottled speckle of colour: a dark charcoal base flecked throughout with tiny fragments of blue, red, white and yellow from the original post-consumer plastics, the pattern continuing through the cut ends so it is clearly solid all the way through, not a surface print. Show the texture as slightly waxy and matte, with fine longitudinal extrusion lines and a small amount of sag between supports where the material has crept over years in the sun. Detail the ends as sawn flat and left unfinished, revealing the speckled section. Show the steel frame as plain hot-dip galvanised with the crystalline spangle pattern visible and white oxide bloom at the welds. Set it beside a path in a community park with a wildflower verge.
