Design a plaza canopy for a Mediterranean town where the shade is grown rather than built. Show a simple pergola of squared timber beams spanning between whitewashed masonry piers, the beams laid at close regular centres with thin battens across them, forming an open grid that is itself no real protection from the sun. Detail the shading as coming almost entirely from mature grapevines trained along the grid — thick gnarled trunks climbing each pier, older woody stems following the main beams, and a dense summer canopy of broad leaves spreading across the battens with bunches of fruit hanging through the gaps. Show the shadow beneath as the characteristic mottled leaf shade, sharp-edged and constantly moving, quite unlike any manufactured screen. Detail the timber as sun-bleached and slightly split, the pier plaster chalky and uneven with the stone showing through where it has fallen away. Show simple café tables and chairs beneath, a few occupied. Set it in a small stone-paved square with shuttered houses and a church tower beyond. Show strong midday sun and a hard blue sky.
