Design waterfront park seating that brings people right down to the water surface. Show a series of broad concrete steps descending from the promenade level directly into a lake, the lowest two or three treads submerged and darkened, so the boundary between land and water moves with the season rather than being fixed by a railing. Detail the treads as generous — six hundred millimetres deep, four hundred and fifty high — clearly proportioned for sitting rather than walking, with a timber capping strip fixed along the nosing of the two driest steps where people sit most. Show the steps running for a long stretch parallel to the shore, interrupted at one point by a narrow flight of proper stairs at a comfortable walking rise. Detail the concrete as pale and honed above the waterline, and progressively darker, greener and slick with algae toward and below it, recording the water's usual level. Show people sitting on the dry steps with bare feet in the shallow water, and reflections breaking on the surface. Set it on an urban lake edge with trees behind and buildings across the water.
