Design the main lantern of a Taiwanese Lantern Festival for the Year of the Horse, about 14 metres tall, in the traditional craft manner. Build a rearing horse on a hand-bent bamboo and steel frame skinned in hand-painted silk, its mane and tail rendered as flowing carved and painted forms rather than realistic hair. Paint the body in a warm chestnut with hand-brushed cloud and flame motifs in gold along the flanks, and add an ornate saddle and bridle in vermilion and cobalt with applied tassels, bells and metallic trim. Light entirely from within so the silk glows and the bamboo ribs read as fine structural lines. Set it on a carved stone platform with relief panels depicting horses and clouds, and corner posts carrying red palace lanterns. Add hanging calligraphic banners with auspicious phrases and lantern strings overhead. Show a warm night with dense crowds and traditional architecture behind.
