Design a sculpture made by accumulating thousands of copies of one mass-produced object. Show a large heap occupying a substantial area of gallery floor — some three metres across and a metre and a half high — composed entirely of one identical item repeated: porcelain spoons, glass bottles, cast iron nails, telephone handsets, shoe lasts. Detail the pile as loose and naturally settled rather than arranged, its profile the angle of repose that material would actually take when tipped, with individual items visible at the surface in every orientation and the interior implied as densely packed. Show the repetition as producing an unexpected material effect: at a distance the heap reads as a single textured substance with its own colour and grain, and only close up does it resolve into countable discrete things. Detail the individual objects as showing small variations of manufacture and wear — a chip, a stain, a slight difference in glaze — so the sameness is never quite total. Show the heap as touching nothing else, sitting directly on a bare polished concrete floor with a wide margin of empty space around it and plain white walls beyond.
