Design a small restaurant room in the manner of Peter Zumthor, made almost entirely from one material handled with total conviction. Line the walls, ceiling and built-in banquette in the same dark oiled timber, its boards running in a consistent direction, the joints tight and the surface left to show grain and small imperfections. Cut no openings except one small window with a deep timber reveal, framing a single fragment of the outside. Build the tables and the bar from the same timber so nothing is added. Keep the floor in a dark stone that absorbs light. Light only from small warm sources placed low — candles on the tables, a single shaded wall light — so the timber glows near them and disappears into darkness above. Add heavy wool curtains at the entrance to soften the acoustics. Allow no artwork, no plants, no decoration of any kind. Show a winter evening, dark and warm, with condensation on the window.
