Design a public artwork that exists only as the paving of a plaza, with nothing standing above ground level anywhere. Show a large urban square roughly eighty metres across whose entire surface is a single composition in cut stone — a sweeping pattern of interlocking curved bands radiating from an off-centre point and spreading across the whole plaza, crossing beneath benches, trees and lamp columns without acknowledging them. Detail the pattern as executed in three stone types only: a pale limestone, a mid grey granite and a near-black basalt, each cut into precisely fitted pieces following the curves, with joints tight and consistent throughout. Show the bands as varying in width from a few hundred millimetres to several metres, creating a sense of flow and speed across the ground, and detail the smallest pieces at the tightest curves as intricately cut. Show the surface finishes as varied for texture as well as tone: the limestone bush-hammered, the granite flamed, the basalt honed smooth, so the pattern is also legible underfoot and in raking light. Detail the plaza's real furniture and people scattered across the pattern, walking over it obliviously. Set it in a European-style civic square. Show low evening sun raking the surface.
