Hollow Silhouette: The Cut-Outs from Steel Plates Take Center Stage

Design a public artwork in which the removed material carries the meaning. Show a large flat steel plate standing upright on a plaza, some eight metres wide and five tall, only twenty-five millimetres thick so it nearly disappears when viewed edge-on. Detail the plate as pierced by a silhouette cut clean through it — a group of human figures walking, a flock of birds, a tree in full leaf — the cut made with a fine kerf so every edge is crisp and no supporting web interrupts the shape. Show the void as the work: through the cut-out the sky, the buildings behind and the moving traffic are visible, so the artwork's content changes continuously with what happens beyond it. Detail the plate's surface as matte black powder coating on both faces, deliberately flat and light-absorbing so the plate reads as pure silhouette and the openings as pure brightness. Show the cut edges as left bare metal, a fine bright line tracing every contour. Detail the sun projecting the same silhouette onto the paving as a sharp shadow drawing, positioned some metres away from the plate itself. Set it on a hard-paved plaza.
