The Wash Area as a Public Interface: Open Washstands Facing the Street

Design a public toilet whose washing area is deliberately outside, facing the public space, so the building's most visible face is one of cleanliness and activity. Show a long stone or terrazzo trough basin running along the building's street elevation, fully open to the park with no wall in front of it, its run of taps and mirrors under a deep sheltering roof overhang. Detail the trough with a continuous slot outlet, a smooth radiused front edge people can lean against, and a lower section at 500 millimetres for children and seated users. Show mirrors mounted on the wall behind at two heights with a shelf below. Detail the drinking fountain integrated at one end of the same trough, so the object serves both functions. Show the cubicle doors set back behind, in shadow, so the private part recedes and the public part advances. Include several people washing hands and one filling a bottle, making the building read as occupied and safe. Show late-afternoon sun under the overhang.
