Mosaic Wall: A Picture from Afar, Small Bricks Up Close

Design a large mosaic wall artwork that resolves differently at different distances. Show a wall some twelve metres wide and six high, entirely surfaced in small glazed ceramic tiles of a uniform twenty-millimetre square module, laid on a strict grid with even grout lines throughout, so the underlying discipline is absolute. Detail the image as a broad landscape or figurative scene composed entirely by tile colour selection, using perhaps thirty distinct glazes, with gradients achieved by dithering — mixing two colours in an increasingly dense scatter — rather than by blending, so every transition is visibly made of discrete units. Show the two reading distances explicitly in one frame by composing the view at an angle: the far end of the wall compressed by perspective so the image reads clearly, and the near end close enough that individual tiles, grout lines and glaze variations dominate and the picture dissolves entirely. Detail the glazes as varying slightly within each colour — some tiles glossier, some with a pinhole, some a shade off — so the surface shimmers unevenly in a way no printed image could. Show a person walking past at the near end for scale. Set it along a public walkway. Show side light raking the tile surface. Photorealistic, pixelated in ceramic, saturated glaze, sharp oblique view along the wall.
