Furniture Stacked into Walls: Volumes of Thousands of Everyday Objects

Design a mass-accumulation installation in the manner of Doris Salcedo, using ordinary domestic furniture as its only material. Show the gap between two interior walls of a gallery — a void some four metres wide and eight tall — completely packed from floor to ceiling with well over a thousand plain wooden chairs, stacked, wedged, inverted and interlocked into a single dense compacted mass. Detail the chairs as ordinary, worn and mismatched: bentwood café chairs, kitchen chairs, school chairs, some missing legs, some with split seats, their finishes ranging from bare pale wood to dark varnish, all clearly used and second-hand. Show the packing as extremely tight with almost no void visible, the mass reading as a solid wall from a distance and resolving into individual chairs only on approach, with the outermost chair legs and backs projecting slightly past the plane like a rough surface texture. Detail the two flanking walls as plain, smooth and unmarked, so the difference between the calm architecture and the violent accumulation is stark. Show the absence of people in the image as pointed, given how many bodies the chairs imply. Detail even overhead light. Photorealistic, dense, warm brown wood against white walls, eye-level frontal view.
