Light and Shadow: Elongated Wood Carvings Under the Arch

Render the long carved timber panel that fills the space beneath a main beam in a Taiwanese temple. Show a horizontal board roughly two and a half metres long and 40 centimetres tall, carved in deep relief with a continuous narrative scene — figures on horseback among rocks, pines and cloud scrolls — pierced right through in places so daylight passes between the carved elements. Detail the carving in several depths so foreground figures stand almost free of the ground while the background rocks stay shallow. Finish the timber in a warm dark brown with gold leaf on the raised surfaces and traces of vermilion and jade in the hollows, worn thin where hands and time have touched it. Show the heavy round beam above it and the shaped bracket blocks at each end. Include the smaller shaped member below with its own foliate carving. Light from a courtyard to one side so the pierced areas glow and the relief reads through shadow. Photorealistic, deep, warm and narrative, eye-level close view.
