Ceramic Mosaic: Small Pieces Forming Large-Scale Curved Surfaces

Design a public sculpture whose entire surface is hand-laid ceramic mosaic over a curving form. Show an undulating mass some ten metres long and three high, its geometry a series of smooth swelling curves with no flat plane and no sharp corner, so the tiling must constantly adapt to double curvature. Detail the mosaic as small irregular shards of glazed ceramic — not uniform squares — cut and nipped to fit the curvature, laid in flowing courses that follow the form's lines rather than any grid, with the grout lines varying in width as the pieces demand. Show the colour as organised into broad drifting bands that shift gradually across the surface: deep cobalt at one end moving through turquoise and jade to a warm ochre at the other, with occasional single tiles of an unexpected colour scattered through as accents. Detail the glazes as varied in finish within the same field — some pieces high gloss, some matte, some crackled — so the surface glints unevenly and never reads as printed. Show the hand-made quality clearly: slight unevenness in the setting bed, pieces sitting a millimetre proud of their neighbours. Set it in a public garden with planting around its base.
