Sculpted Granite Benches: Where Sculpture Meets Seating

Design park seating in the manner of Isamu Noguchi, where the distinction between sculpture and furniture is refused. Show three large granite blocks placed on a mown lawn in a loose triangular relationship, each carved so that one or two faces are worked to a smooth polished plane while the rest of the block is left in its rough split state, the contrast between finished and raw doing all the design work. Detail the polished faces as gently dished and slightly angled — clearly shaped by a body's weight and posture — with the transition from polished to rough left as a hard tool-cut edge rather than a blend. Show the granite as a warm grey with dark mineral flecking, the rough faces still bearing drill scars from splitting, the polished faces holding a soft sheen. Detail each block as sitting directly on the grass with no base, plinth or paving, partly settled into the turf so the ground reads as having accepted it. Show the group's spacing as deliberately awkward — too far apart for easy conversation, close enough to be one composition. Set it in an open park with a low horizon. Show soft overcast light.
